History

Todd & Duncan was founded in 1867 in Scotland by William Todd & James Duncan.

The original mill was in Alva, Clackmannanshire. It acquired the Kinross spinning mills on the picturesque shores of Loch Leven in 1897. When fire destroyed the Alva mill in 1906, the entire business moved to the Kinross site.

In 1946 a young entrepreneur entered the family firm. Alan Smith was convinced that the future of the firm lay in specialised high value knitting yarns, rather than the broad range of textiles it had traditionally produced. He started with fine lambswool, but saw the potential for a specialist skill in spinning high quality single ply cashmere yarn.

Since then Todd & Duncan quickly grew into the world's largest and finest quality spinner of cashmere yarn; significant investments have been made since then using the latest technology to enhance the performance, productivity and consistency of the natural fibres and Scottish spinning expertise.

Todd & Duncan shares the heritage of its parent's founder, Joseph Dawson, who created today's cashmere industry. He invented the first mechanical process to clean and dehair raw cashmere fibre at the end of the 19th century.

Todd & Duncan is now the acknowledged leader in production of finest quality cashmere yarns for the world's most famous knitwear brands and is constantly refining and developing new textures & colours to keep pace with changing fashion needs.

Todd & Duncan became a subsidiary of Ningxia Zhongyin Cashmere Company in September 2009, the largest cashmere dehairing and combing operation in China and ranked number one in the Chinese cashmere industry since 2004.
